Bob responds to the recent debate in Parliament on India's new farming laws and ongoing protests. Bob states that as the largest democracy in the world, these are matters for India to decide, and it is not for the United Kingdom to try and instruct the people of India what to do.
Bob notes that the laws will benefit small and low income farmers and are the result of discussions taking place over two decades, across multiple governments. He states that we must also be cautious of videos showing protests against the laws. The Indian police operates in the same manner as other democracies around the world, and acts to ensure demonstrations can take place in an orderly manner, but they must take action when protests turn violent. Violent protests are clearly unacceptable in any democracy.
Bob concludes that the protests need to be considered in the light of the advantage that farmers will gain from the new laws and that we must converse with each other without stirring up hostility.
